Myanmar NGOs & CBOs Networking and Learning Forum for Community Based Disaster Risk Management

Networking and Learning Forum for Community Based Disaster Risk Management was held at the Chatrium Hotels, Yangon on 29th June to 2nd July 2009. The Forum was organized by Mingalar Myanmar and the participants are Myanmar NGOs and Community Based Organizations.

At the Opening Ceremony, the Ambassador of Germany, Ambassador of the Republic of Singapore, Charg'e d' Affaires of the Embassy of the United States of America, Second Secretary from the Embassy of Australia and Country Director from UNDP attended.

Director of Mingalar Myanmar, Daw Yuza Maw Htoon addressed the occasion with an introduction account of Community Based Disaster Risk Management and the objectives of the Forum. The Ambassadors, Charg'e d' Affaires, Counselors and responsible persons from United Nations exchanged their views with Myanmar CBOs.

Mingalar Myanmar has been conducting Disaster Risk Management Training Programs from state and division level to village community level. Mingalar Myanmar continues such community training programs in the future.

Mingalar Myanmar (MM) is a local, non-profit organization established and run by private citizens of Myanmar whose mission is to promote and implement sustainable development programs throughout the country. MM was founded by a group of pre-eminent academics, businessmen, social workers and community members who are committed to the ideal of a more transparent and civil society. MM works to achieve this goal through grass roots programs that promote sustainable economic development, encourage community based organizations, and protect the natural resources of Myanmar.

Mingalar Myanmar Activities (2011-2012)

1. The Tube-Well Project, 2011. The Embassy of Singapore, 385 villages in 8 townships of Ayeyarwaddy Delta and Yangon Division.

2. Community Based Mangrove Rehabilitation Project, 2011, The Embassy of Singapore, 65 villages in Ayeyarwaddy Delta and Yangon Division.

3. The Project “Farmer Fields School”, FAO, 9 villages in Bogale Townships, Ayeyarwaddy Delta.(2011-2012)

4. Implementing the project named “Purchase of equipment for 4 rural schools in Myanmar”. Embassy of the Republic of Poland in the Kingdom of Thailand.(2012)

5. Implementing the project “Community Empowerment with Women-led Self Help Group Program”, 10 Townships in Yangon Divisions, Netherland.(2012)

6. Implementing the project named “Micro Finance Institution”, 10 Townships in Yangon Division. German Saving Bank Foundation for International Cooperation (2012).

7. Organizing U.S. – Myanmar Dialogue Track 1.5. (2012, March)

8. Organizing two collaborative Workshops between University of Medicine – 1 and John Hopkins University. U.S. Korea Institute, SAIS, Johns Hopkins University and Perdana University of Graduate School. (2012, March, May)

9. Organizing Democracy-Lessons Learned Workshop. Ministry of Foreign Affair of Republic of Poland, Secretariat of Community of Democracy and Polish Aid, (2012, May)
